About Mummy

Hi everyone, I'm Morgan and Hamish's mum, Alex

I was born in England and have lived in Australia for over 20 years, I've lived in Victoria and Queensland, but now reside in Western Sydney, New South Wales.

I work as an Aged Care nurse and am particularly interested in speaking up for those that don't have a voice (figuratively speaking) and have been studying in Community Services, having done a Certificate 4 in Mental Health last year and am now half way through a Diploma in Community Services (Alcohol & Other Drugs and Mental Health).

I believe we are very very lucky to be living where we are, we have access to food, shelter, transport, we have the freedom to travel, talk to who we want to talk to, and gender equality is reasonably good here. Women can go to work, wear the clothes they want to wear, we get to vote, and choose who we spend our lives with.

Some people complain about Australia, but looking at the world around us, we really are the lucky country, although we do have a long way to go in regards to indigenous welfare.

My kids are Morgan (9) and Hamish (7) and the idea of children living in poverty was brought to their attention by a World Vision stand pre Christmas 2011. It was about an 8 year old girl who had to walk all day just to get water, water which was dirty and made her sick. They thought that was really sad, because she couldn't play and couldn't go to school to learn to read and write and make friends. We bought World Vision gifts for all our extended family last year!

For us as a family we really wanted to get involved in the 40 hour famine, but none of us need to go without food, so we didn't know what to do, until I discovered that we could give up something else!

I am looking forward to making our Famine weekend a great learning adventure, and sharing it with you via our blog!

Yours, Alex
